What’s so special about rapeseed oil? Where can you use it?
Rapeseed oil comes from oilseed rape – those bright yellow fields you’ve been passing lately. It’s related to mustard and is a root vegetable. The oil has a delicious nutty flavour and can be used in dressings, stir frys and cooking.
Our very own rapeseed oil producer is Chris Pratt who started his oil production business in 2007 from the family-run farm in Hampshire, “My dad gave me a love of farming from an early age. Combining this with my passion for food and cooking was a natural progression and the end result, Pratt’s Rapeseed Oil, is definitely a labour of love.”
He had always enjoyed farming and also had a love of food and cooking and so producing an end product from what they produced on the farm seemed like a good idea.
Chris says, “The flavoured oils are fantastic because they are unique flavours and unlike many flavoured oils are strong enough to really have a use in cooking. With the salad dressings, I have gone down the simple is better route and just done two simple vinaigrettes but using the best quality ingredients possible.”
The salad dressings are a delicious Balsamic Vinaigrette and a Cider Vinaigrette. These add to the Pratt’s food range that already includes high quality rapeseed oil and flavoured oils.
Chris Pratt says, “They’re simple products, but they use top drawer ingredients.”
Rapeseed is great tasting and good for you too. It’s low in Saturated Fats,
High in Omega 3 that has anti-inflammatory properties helping it to maintain joints and is said to help reduce the risk of heart disease. It also contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects cells against the effects of free radicals.
