A Farming Life Rooted in Hampshire
At Hampshire Farmers’ Markets, we are proud to celebrate producers who are passionate about quality, sustainability and the future of British farming. The Wessex Flock at Maple Farm is a shining example of this commitment, combining ethical sheep farming, family values and a determination to support the British wool industry.
The driving force behind The Wessex Flock’s wool enterprise is Liz Rough, whose connection to agriculture began when she was raised on a mixed dairy farm in Hampshire. After studying agriculture at Sparsholt College, she gained experience working on a variety of farms across the county before joining Maple Farm more than a decade ago.
Maple Farm was already an established family-run farm, Over the years, Liz became an integral part of both the farm and the family, bringing her own passion and expertise to the business.
While the farm had always sold wool through commercial channels, she recognised an opportunity to add value to the fleece produced by the flock and to champion British wool at a time when it was becoming increasingly difficult to find British-made wool products on the high street.

Reviving Interest in British Wool
A lifelong admirer of wool for its warmth, durability and versatility, Liz was inspired to develop a dedicated wool brand after noticing how little British wool was represented in retail outlets. Concerned that consumers were losing their connection to one of Britain’s most traditional natural fibres, she set out to create products that celebrated the quality of wool produced on the farm.
The result was The Wessex Flock, a brand that places British wool at its heart.
The farm’s flock of more than 6,000 New Zealand Romney breeding ewes produces excellent-quality fleece. The scale of the operation allows the business to work directly with British manufacturers and processors, helping to keep more of the supply chain within the UK and supporting British industry at every stage.
At a time when synthetic fibres dominate the clothing market, initiatives like The Wessex Flock play an important role in promoting wool as a natural, renewable and sustainable alternative.

A Family Farm for Future Generations
Family farming remains central to life at Maple Farm. The business spans several generations, with family members actively involved in the day-to-day running of the farm and a clear commitment to passing knowledge and skills on to future generations.
Children and grandchildren are already playing their part, whether helping with livestock, supporting farm activities or running a small honesty-box egg stall for local customers. This strong family involvement reflects the values that have sustained British family farms for generations.
The farm’s long-term vision is firmly rooted in ensuring that the business continues to thrive for future generations while remaining connected to the local community and countryside.
Ethical Sheep Farming in Harmony with Nature
Animal welfare is one of the guiding principles of the farm’s management approach.
The New Zealand Romney breed was specifically chosen because it is well suited to outdoor lambing and year-round grazing. By working with the natural seasons, the farm is able to provide a system that closely reflects the sheep’s natural environment.
Lambing takes place outdoors in the spring when grass growth begins to increase and weather conditions are more favourable. Lambs are born outside and remain outdoors throughout their lives, grazing on pasture and benefiting from a natural, low-stress environment.
The farm team carries out regular welfare checks across the flock, monitoring health, grazing conditions and fencing to ensure the sheep remain safe and healthy. With flocks spread across a number of sites, this involves careful planning and a dedicated team working together to maintain high welfare standards.
This commitment to working alongside nature, rather than against it, is a key part of the farm’s ethical approach to livestock farming.

Supporting Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainability is also reflected in the way Maple Farm works with neighbouring farms.
The business grows its own fodder beet and collaborates with local arable farmers to grow forage crops such as turnips within crop rotations. These partnerships provide valuable grazing for livestock while helping improve soil health and fertility for crop production.
By working closely with other local farmers, the farm contributes to a more sustainable agricultural system that benefits both livestock and arable enterprises.
The business also transports the majority of its livestock using its own equipment or trusted local transporters, helping to minimise stress for the animals and maintain high welfare standards throughout their lives.
Protecting the Flock
Among the more unusual members of the farming team are the farm’s alpacas, which play an important role in protecting sheep and lambs.
Guard alpacas are used across various flocks, particularly where sheep are grazing further from the main farm. Their presence helps deter potential threats and provides an additional layer of protection for livestock.
The use of alpacas forms part of the farm’s wider commitment to safeguarding animal welfare and finding practical solutions to challenges faced by modern livestock farmers.

Investing in the Next Generation
The future of British farming depends on attracting and supporting young people entering the industry, and Maple Farm is committed to playing its part.
The farm works closely with Sparsholt College, providing placements and practical experience opportunities for students studying agriculture. Several young people have gone on to gain valuable experience overseas before returning to continue their agricultural careers in Hampshire.
Alongside investing in young talent, the farm is passionate about educating the public. Events such as LEAF Open Farm Sunday provide opportunities for visitors to see first-hand how food and wool are produced, helping to bridge the gap between consumers and the farming community.

Supporting British Food, Farming and Fibre
The story of The Wessex Flock highlights the vital role that family farms continue to play in producing food, caring for the countryside and preserving traditional British industries.
Through ethical livestock management, sustainable farming practices and a commitment to promoting British wool, Maple Farm demonstrates how modern farming can successfully combine innovation with tradition.
For consumers, supporting businesses like The Wessex Flock means supporting British farmers, British manufacturing and the future of one of the country’s most important natural resources. Whether through locally produced food or products made from British wool, every purchase helps strengthen rural communities and ensure that farming skills and traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
